Windward’s unique technology, bringing big data analytics to the opaque world of shipping, wins first place at the International Innovation Competition for HLS and Cyber Technology

TEL AVIV – November 12, 2014 – Windward, a specialized data and analytics company focused on the maritime domain, won first place in the International Innovation Competition for HLS and Cyber Technology held in Tel Aviv last night. The competition was co-sponsored by Israel’s Office of the Chief Scientist, the Israeli Export Institute, and the Israeli Industry Center of R&D. Windward was one of 11 finalists in the competition.

“We are delighted that Windward’s technology, developed by a hugely talented team of big data scientists and shipping and economics experts, has been recognized for its ability to truly revolutionize our understanding of vessel activity worldwide,” said Ami Daniel, Windward’s co-Founder and CEO. “We were honored to be included among a group of innovative companies all bringing cutting edge solutions to different aspects of HLS and cyber security. These innovations are being implemented worldwide and are making a real difference in our lives every day.”

Cybersecurity is a growing concern in the maritime domain, as ships worldwide are increasingly manipulating their information to conceal their identity and activities, severely undermining decision makers relying on this information. Windward recently published a comprehensive report on this trend, titled AIS Data on the High Seas, looking at the manipulation practices used by ships and their far-reaching cybersecurity ramifications. The report, prompted by anecdotal evidence of data manipulation by ships, confirmed the growing trend of manipulation and the need for innovative technological solutions to combat this phenomenon.
